Kemi is an NYC-based jewelry designer and travel enthusiast. She's in the middle of a Kickstarter for her creation of Kemi Clips: the travel hat companion designed by a jeweler [ends April 24th].

I've enjoyed tracking Kemi's journey as an artisan entrepreneur over the past decade, inspired by her travels and blending cultures.
She's an old friend from college – sorority sister and fellow dance competition choreographer, now many moons ago!

She took the leap to start Kemi Designs years before other peers had ventured into self-employment. She imagines, designs, and handcrafts her beautiful metal pieces. I've always appreciated Kemi's honesty about the ups-and-downs of running her own show.

As a frequent flyer myself who often struggles with the most efficient ways to pack (and backpack!) for the airport shuffle, I was struck by what a simple, yet effective solution Kemi Clips is for the 'travel hat dilemma'. Plus, I love this Kickstarter because it helps support a fellow female adventurer, creative entrepreneur, and social good supporter!

Kemi designs the jewelry collection for Two Blind Brothers, a social enterprise and charity project that donates 100% of proceeds to support retinal eye disease cures.

So, how did you dream up Kemi Clips?

The idea for the Kemi Clip came about when I was traveling through Europe with my (now) fiancé. I wanted to bring a good hat since we’d be on the road for three weeks and there were definitely going to be times where we wouldn’t have time to wash our hair (we slept in a camper van a few nights!). I struggled to figure out a way to travel with it through all the airports we’d have to go through, so I grabbed a binder clip from my desk and attached my hat to my bag that way! As soon as people approached me in the airport saying what a great idea it was, I knew I had something good that needed to be officially created.

As an NYC-based traveler, what's your favorite far-off place?

My favorite travel destination has to be Australia. It’s where my fiancé is from, so when we go we get to spend time with his family and friends, and it just brings a whole different experience to traveling to such a far away country. It’s amazing how similar our family and friends are, despite growing up on opposite sides of the world!

What would be your top advice for first-time travelers to the Big Apple?

My top tip for any first timers traveling to NYC would be to definitely stay in an Airbnb instead of a hotel (and preferable downtown). That way you can completely immerse yourself in the city’s culture and really see what it feels like to live here. To be around the constant energy that’s always buzzing through the streets of NYC is unlike any other!
